Hungary is the first country from the Eastern communist countries that started hosting a huge Christmas Market in its capital Budapest. That main Christmas market takes place at the square Vorosmarty and besides the lovely Christmas tree there, the place presents plenty of things to be seen and many activities to be done. Vorosmarty square is in the center of the Budapest city very close to the apartments in Budapest and is in the middle of the tourist zone.

The Christmas market in Budapest is among the most popular fairs of that kind in Europe. It comes with more than one hundred wooden pavilions and offer many products of high quality from the spheres of applied arts and folklore, which are built right on the square. There one can marvel at the beautiful Christmas decorations, the candles and small presents, the woolen hats, gloves and other products. Actually, one can buy all the presents one needs for the loved ones. All the goods presented there are checked by the Association of the Hungarian Folk Artists

While enjoying all those products which are evaluated by a jury, one can also try some delicious meals from the typical Hungarian buffets like mulled wine, sausages, roast chestnuts, flat bread baked in a cob oven, sweet Hungarian pastry and other market snacks. The pavilions are colorful and the red mulled wine makes the walk in the cold evening nice and pleasant. The atmosphere is festive and joyful, there are many performances by children, different folklore groups, brass and reed bands, dance houses, choirs and string orchestras.

The very peak of the Budapest Christmas market musical entertainment is when the Calendar Advent opens on the Advent Days at 5 o’clock in the afternoon with a spectacular show with fanfares, chimes and delightful lights. The Christmas tree on the market square is huge and is brightly lit and its decoration is really impressive and festive.

Kids seem to have great fun here at the Budapest Christmas market, since there are many puppet shows performances, many playhouses, handicraft areas, games for Santa Claus and various other very exciting entertainment options. The Budapest Christmas market fair opens in the middle of November and operated until the very end of December.

There are two other Christmas markets as well. There is one small market on the other side of Liszt Ferenc ter. This market is closing early, but there still are places for hot wine and food. The market sells various typical Hungarian gifts and souvenirs. The Christmas market in Budapest is open every day from 10 o’clock in the morning until 8 o’clock in the evening. The place is favorite to the locals and to the tourists as well and the atmosphere is festive, joyful and great. There are even Christmas Market Walking Tours available, which are organized every Wednesday to Sunday. During the tour, people are told about the Christmas traditions in Hungary they visit two of the Christmas market places and there they taste the mull wine. The entire tour lasts for 2.5 hours.
